CD-ROM Product Support FAQ's - Error Messages

After you install any software, you should restart your computer. Please make sure that your computer's Operating System and all applications are fully up to date with the latest releases as well. You can read more about updating Windows and improving your computer's security on the Microsoft Web site.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Before installing, make sure all other programs are closed. In MS Windows, make sure you are the only user logged in and you are the Administrator.

If you installed software and other programs were open, or other users were logged into Windows XP, or you were not the Administrator, you may need to uninstall the Digital Learning System and reinstall it. You can uninstall from your Windows Control Panel by selecting Add/Remove Programs. Make sure to follow the installation instructions.

After you install the Digital Learning System or a Digital Learning Guide, you must activate it. If you did not activate the software within 30 days of installing it, you may get this message. (This applies to DLS versions 2.0.2 and older.)

You may have also selected the Product Code TR1 from the drop-down menu during activation. This activates a 30-day trial version of the software. You must activate using the Product Code and CD Key that came with your CD.

To activate, launch the DLS, select Help from the main menu, and then choose License Management. If the Upgrade DLS menu item is available, select it and then follow the on-screen prompts to activate. Make sure to select the correct Product Code from the drop-down menu.

If Upgrade DLS is not available under the License Management option or the Product Code that came with your CD is not included in the pull-down menu, you may have to uninstall the software, reinstall it, and activate properly. You can uninstall from your Windows Control Panel by selecting Add/Remove Programs.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you received a Digital Learning Guide through one of our resell partners, you may have received a 30-day trial access to the Knowledge Manager function. The Knowledge Manager allows you to create your own Learning Guides. However, you do not need access to the Knowledge Manager to continue using your Digital Learning Guides or the Personal Learning Assistant feature of the Digital Learning System.

If you would like to continue using the Knowledge Manager after your 30-day trial, you can purchase an upgrade at the BrainX Online Store. Select the appropriate upgrade from the list and purchase it. You will receive an e-mail within one business day with a new registration key and installation instructions.

Note: If you see the error "there was a problem opening the file Error Code 76 Path not found in the Knowledge Manager" (not in a pop up message box, please read this article.

This error occurs when DLS is installed to another directory other than default. It is a known bug and will be addressed in the next release. To correct the situation, uninstall DLS and reinstall to the default path: "C:\Program Files\brainX\"

Note: This error is usually caused by an OCX or DLL file which is a different version than DLS expects. To correct the situation, please perform the following steps: Caution: This fix may disrupt other installed programs which use these shared system files. If this occurs, please contact us for assistance.

First, make sure DLS is closed.

Download backup.zip

Save it to your desktop. Extract the Backup.bat file to your desktop.

Insert the DLS CD into your CD-ROM drive. Close the autoplay menu that pops-up, open My Computer and look for Getting A`s (D:) or BibleByHeart (F:) (Where Getting A`s is your DLS Product and D: or F: is the letter of your CD-Rom drive) On your desktop, double click Backup.bat. When you are prompted to type in the letter of your CD-Rom drive, type in the single letter WITHOUT the colon (":") (i.e. "d") which corresponds to the CD-Rom drive letter you saw in My Computer. Finally, press Enter and reboot your computer.

If you do not see 1 file(s) copied. On every line (for example, the system can not find the specified file) the process will fail. If this occurs, please contact us.

You may receive the following error message when you try to save a record in a KnowledgeBase or when the program first loads up.

Important: Make sure that you have updated Windows and Office. Please perform all critical updates for both Windows and Office and then return to this article.

Microsoft released an update to MDAC 2.7 (Microsoft Data Access Components), service pack 1 to correct an access error on Windows 2000 systems and we have included this update on recent versions (1.3.1 and newer) of DLS.

Download and run the MDAC Utility: Component Checker to see which version you currently have installed.

Click the link above and then download by saving to disk. When the download is finished click open to install the program (or double click cc_pkg.exe) and click continue to install.

The program will present you with the default option of: "Perform analysis of your machine and automatically determine the release version." Make sure this option is checked and click OK. You will now see a message box like this:

Check the text inside the red circle above. (Yours may be different from that in the picture) Click No and then close the program.

If your version number is less than 2.8 (in the example above it is version 2.8) or your version is Unknown you will need to download the latest MDAC SP from Microsoft: http://msdn.microsoft.com/data/mdac/

Click the link to MDAC 2.8, click download and then save. When the download is complete, click open or double click the file. The installer will now install the MDAC files, click Continue if prompted. Note: if you receive a message "MDAC 2.8 RTM is incompatible with this version of Windows. All of its features are currently part of Windows." you are up-to-date.

You may be missing or need repair of the VB6 runtime components as well as Windows Script.

This error occurs when DLS is unable to locate MainConfig.mdb, which is usually attributed to a missing or corrupted core component.

To fix the problem, download and install the following three files

Download MDAC: (Microsoft Data Access Components)

Download Windows Script 5.6

Download VB6 Runtime Components

Additional Instructions for MDAC installation:

Run the downloaded applications. When the program window is displayed, click on the 'Yes' button, then click 'Continue', then click 'OK'.

Next, click the large button to the left of the text Complete\Custom Install. Put a check mark next to Data Access Drivers (first item on the list) and then click Continue.

In a few moments, you will get a dialog saying that the setup completed successfully. Click the 'OK' button to exit and launch DLS

The Digital Learning System supports direct import of a variety of word processing formats. If your word processor document is not directly supported, DLS can still access the information after a quick conversion.

To convert your document, open your word processor and use the "Save As..." feature to save a copy of your document as an RTF (Rich-Text Format) file. The Digital Learning System directly reads the RTF format and you will be able to open and gather information from this format directly into DLS.

You can also manually enter information or "cut and paste" it from another digital source. Try including some pictures or images in your explanations or hints!

Tip: You may also find it easier to convert all of your documents to the RTF format. They may load much faster into the "Reader Box" and will be easier to work with!

Make sure you have a copy of Adobe Acrobat reader installed. You can download a free copy of Acrobat from the Adobe Web site.

Some Adobe PDFs are locked so the user can`t copy information from them. In this instance, you can still open the document inside of the Digital Learning System, but you will have to manually type information from the document into the desired fields.

In order to edit in or copy information from an Acrobat PDF file, you must make sure the Text Select Tool on the Acrobat Reader toolbar is selected for text or the Graphics Select Tool is chosen for images. After doing so you should be able to select text and manually copy it for transfer to DLS or copy and paste images.

If you are still unable to copy the information (Copy on the right-click pop-up is not highlighted), the author of that file has probably disabled text copying and you will be unable to directly transfer information from that PDF into DLS without retyping it.

For Windows NT 4.0 users there are three items you must check to ensure your computer system is ready to install DLS:

1. NT Service Pack 6 or later (Supplied on the DLS CD).

2. The user account you are using must have Administrator-level access.

3. Internet Explorer Version 4.01 sp2 (or later). (Also supplied on the DLS     CD.)

Please confirm that you have all of these prerequisites and then DLS should install with no problems.

Updating your Windows operating system to include the latest fixes should correct these problems as well. Just use the Windows update feature that comes with your computer.

Refer to the Read Me file found on the DLS CD for important installation information.

If you receive an error while trying to install DLS that says you don`t have access rights under Windows NT, 2000, and XP, please note that you must have Administrator-level privileges before installing DLS. If you`re not sure how to do this, please contact your network administrator or technical support personnel at your place of business or location you are attempting to install the software.

Sometimes after calling up a Web page your cursor may remain looking like an hourglass even though the page has finished loading. To correct this, click the Stop button on the Web toolbar and your default cursor will be displayed.

You may receive the following error message when you try to save a record in a KnowledgeBase and you are using a particular version of Windows.
